- Mark, So sorry to hear about your injuries! I am relieved, though, that you will mend. Perhaps you and Dick Stardig can compare x-rays of your broken ribs!

- #2Silly question this, but how do you know if you have a cracked rib ? What does it feel like ?
I have been suffering with a bad pain in my side. It only hurts though when i move suddenly / cough / sneeze or push something heavy like a hoover.
Just then i saw something funny on here and sniggered, and it hurt.
Now i dont recall being 'damaged', but i am prone to sneeze / cough quite a bit.
Im wondering if i have cracked a rib. Now, i know there is nothing you can do, and you have to let it heal naturally, but what would it feel like ? I could be barking up the wrong tree ?
chances are you've just bruised a rib, if it was cracked it would constantly hurt, not just when you put a bit of pressure onto the top half of your body !
I've had it before and it hurts like hell for a week or so ! - #3Silly question this, but how do you know if you have a cracked rib ? What does it feel like ?

I have had a cracked rib before due to a 'bear' hug, you could actually feel it go and I'm sure I heard it! It's painful when you laugh etc. I would leave it for the day and see how it is tomorrow. It could be muscular which a bath might help. If it still hurts go to your doc. You're right, they cant do anything but at least you will know what you are dealing with and be able to look after yourself. Maybe get some decent pain killers too if you need them. - #4Hmmm, thanks guys. It might just be bruised then. I didnt hear anything 'crack'. It started last Saturday, and i remember trying to hoover, clutching hold of my side as it hurt so much.

No doctor but it sounds muscular. Go have a nice bubble bath or call your local massuese - #6My OH broke 4 ribs (and a collar bone and elbow!) last year. His ribs hurt alot - he could almost sense a 'grating' sensation in the early days and breathing in a full breath was impossible without pain. Sleeping was difficult (naturally given the state he was in). He couldn't laugh, sneeze, cough without agony in his chest. Sounds like you may have bruised a rib or the muscles surrounding them. If you had broken a rib you would probably know what it was that broke it (if you see what I mean).
But as others have said, there's absolutely nothing to be done with broken ribs. You are just given Tramadol to make you pie-eyed so it doesn't hurt so much and they heal by themselves in a few weeks. - #7No doctor but it sounds muscular. Go have a nice bubble bath or call your local massuese
Can i pick a massuese that offers 'extra' services too Then again .... i dont think ive got the energy - #8
No, sounds like a cracked rib to me!No doctor but it sounds muscular. Go have a nice bubble bath or call your local massuese
I've had it before after a bout of coughing, very painful and it took weeks to heal, there is nothing a massuer could do for it. You can't strap it or anything. I did it a couple of times over the course of 2 years, the last time was at a Christmas party, I was drunk and dancing with my boss to a 12' single that wouldn't stop, I was laughing so hard it went - #9
Err, I think the point is that you dont, err, use much energy! Can i pick a massuese that offers 'extra' services too Then again .... i dont think ive got the energy - #10No, sounds like a cracked rib to me!

Nah, did you not KNOW you had a cracked rib? The OP isnt sure and isn't in the same kind of pain we have shared. Looks like muscular. The massage idea was just for fun and needn't massage the ribs anyway, hell, getting a rub down is going to make you feel better regardless of what is or isnt broken! - #11My OH broke 4 ribs (and a collar bone and elbow!) last year. How on earth did this happen? I would think that breaking an elbow takes some doing - and hurts like hell! - #12

But you wouldn't be able to lie on your front for a rub down
Are we going around in circles here? - #13Sorry, that was a double wink. I really don't have a twitch

He was in France on day one of a week long cycling holiday. And he came off his bike - on a country lane and no-one else involved. His wheel bucked on a stone, twisted and he was off. Methinks he was going too fast..... He spent the whole time in a French hospital drugged up on morphine. His elbow needed to be wired in an operation. Poor chap was in a right state. The pain he was in... I can't tell you. He was in agony and I had to change his dressing when he got back. I am very sqeamish and the saying 'love is' is so true as I almost fainted every time.
All well now though - save for funny bumpy elbow. His injuries (particularly the collarbone) are VERY common in cyclists as they tend to put out their arm to break their fall as the come off and the jolt goes up the arm to the collar bone, which breaks). Lovely stuff. There are at least 4 collarbone breaks in any Tour de France from what I've seen on the telly. You can always tell they've broken it from how they hold their arm.... - #15Ah!!!

Nothing wrong with that I wasn't thinking of ... actually, lets not go there. - #16He was in France on day one of a week long cycling holiday. Glad all is well now but ouch, that sounds horrendous. I can just about cope with the thought of breaking ribs and collarbone but an elbow sounds particularly awful - I'm guessing it's not a very common bone to break. I'm not surprised you nearly fainted when you had to change his dressing! The poor sod! - #17Glad all is well now but ouch, that sounds horrendous. I've had a broken elbow too, now that's NOT funny! They took a HUGE needle to drain it. If the pain wasn't enough the needle made me feel light headed! Had shingles at the time too. Oh the joys. - #18I've had a broken elbow too, now that's NOT funny! They took a HUGE needle to drain it. If the pain wasn't enough the needle made me feel light headed! Had shingles at the time too. Blimey - you too! How did you do yours (why does that remind me of creme eggs?)? I would guess simply by the job it does that it has to be sturdier than other bones in the body. I can't even imagine the pain.
However, I've experienced shingles and that was a hell of its own kind. Poor poor you - #19Blimey - you too! How did you do yours (why does that remind me of creme eggs?)? I would guess simply by the job it does that it has to be sturdier than other bones in the body. I can't even imagine the pain.

Well, it was late work and we decided to go to a club which had a curfew so we were running (SOMA SF), there was a fence loose on the pavement and I tripped, naturally you put out your hands but I only managed my elbow! So I slammed it. Strangely, as I was strung out on speed at the time, I didnt feel any pain but my friend at the time wondered why, when dancing at The Stud my left arm wasn't moving! OMG when I sobered up the pain was, inconceivable. Straight to the GH like a baby crying and wailing! Then there was that needle. Swoon.....
